A session with S. today trying to correct and refine my milonga triaspies…

In attempting to create “muscle memory” for stylish triaspie steps, I need to remember counter-rotation of the body, as well as the proper execution of the triaspie.

The “stomp” – a semi-exaggerated step forward with the (r), before returning it, can make the step aesthetically cleaner. In the triaspe to the right side, which has bedeviled me, the (r( foot travels forward and to the right and back to the midline; again finish the “box.”

In both of these triaspes we have examined in class, I need to clearly finish the figure – the “box” — rather than hurry into another triaspe.

A “secret” to successful milonga triaspe steps is to make the outside steps shorter step than normal.

Variant: After stepping outside with the right, bringing it back but not across the midline; collecting, and stepping forward with the left, bringing back but not across the midline…iteratations. I confess to some confusion with this and will revisit this in a private lesson.

The reason that my side-step gancho sometimes resolves into an ocho/boleo is that I pause rather than continue what would have otherwise been a molineta-like figure; thus the perceived lead is something like an ocho rather than a continuation into a back step from the side step.

An elaboration on the ocho cortado in close embrace is to take a milonga – style side step to the lead’s right after your step which brings her alongside you. ..And then to do the ocho cortado. This adds an additional step for her, as well. If you do this, remember to keep the lead’s feet mostly collected; angle them for the cortado movement a few degrees (making the step radial vs. linear), but don’t take an extra step, not even a tiny one.

A variant milonga step is to lead forward with the (l) from the bottom of the box; which probably doesn’t add much in the way of value. If it is to be done, a sidestep to the lead’s (r) makes it a bit smoother.

In doing ocho cortados in milonga, remember that they can be done with exquisite musicality, (s)(s)(q)(q)(s).

Simple triaspes in milonga..

A simple triaspe in milonga (done from the “top” of the “box”) is to step outside with the (r), then (l) and utilize something like a hesitation step, taking care to pass your weight forward and back over the midline to help lead her. Another triaspe is to back step with the left and forward again,slightly shifting weight, remembering though not to cross the middle of the shared frame.

Remember to step with every beat in milonga. Remember to properly collect to differentiate el borracho from zig-zag steps.

el borracho

In a milonga class with I & S this evening, el borracho (“the drunk”) was demonstrated; a kind of side-ways crab walk done with the right forward from the bottom of the milonga “box”. Also demonstrated was a step last seen from Arnaud; a zig-zag step collecting at the end of each “zig” or “zag”, this done in conjunction with el borracho. I must listen to more milonga music and practice my L-fwd/collect/R-back.
